To Understand Better Our Competitor – China

In my view, the current relations of US and China is like a marriage of convenience. There are so many joint ventures between them, and they would rather stay married, at least for a while, than divorce. But nothing will remain unchanged as time goes by. Sometimes affection might germinate if they keep the communication open; other times they might tear apart if they shut off one another.

Our mainstream media, particularly the TV, should play a major role in helping them understand each other better, but their report is lop-sided. It is true that China has made huge mistakes and has enormous problems. But they also have made giant progress. When it comes to report China’s mistake or misfortune, the media present it in vivid image and detail. I don’t recall they have ever reported anything positive about China in vivid image and detail. That won’t help us understand China.

While lying in my couch with a broken leg, I watched the Phoenix TV in Hong Kong. One day a talk show host interviewed three children, two girls and a boy, about twelve years old. They were rewarded, for their good grade, to tour Beijing. Each was given $100 yuan, about US$13, a windfall for a child from a backwater village. When asked how she had spent it, the girl answered that she had bought a storybook of Greek Mythology and someday she wanted to write stories too. At this point I couldn’t help bursting into tears. That was me, except that I was a privileged girl living in the greatest metropolis of China – Shanghai, and at that time the common fate of girls from the countryside was to be sold as child bride or slave-maid or into brothels. How many of us know such stories from China?

Shunning to report on China in a “fair and balanced” manner, is a sort of sophisticated form of the 1882 Exclusion Act which aimed at Chinese only. Historically United States has had a tendency to turn its back on Chinese. In my book, RETURN TO THE MIDDLE KINGDOM, I describe how Eugene Chen, with the support of Sun Yatsen, designed a policy to “appeal to America’s best instincts;” how after the betrayal of Stalin in 1927, the Chinese Communist Party began to distance them from the Soviet Union.

Suspicious of their Soviet ally, Zhou Enlai started to approach Americans since mid-1930s. But the American politicians, with little knowledge about China, would rather lump the Bolsheviks and the Chinese communists together. One result was that when Stalin egged on North Korea into invading South Korea, the American government ignored China’s overture for dialogue. What China wanted to do is what China is doing now: Using their influence to restrain North Korea. Finally both sides sit down and talk things over the recent North Korea crisis. But why waited until after such a huge cost of lives and resources? Refusing to talk with someone we don’t like is not the best policy. This is a lesson we mustn’t forget.

Electric guitar types boil down to 2 basic types, solid body and hollow body. As the name suggests a solid body guitar has no hollow space inside, and is usually, though not exclusively, made of solid wood. Different types of timber can produce different sounds, so as you get better you may want to research more on the type of timber you need to produce the sound you want, but in the early stages if you’re buying a cheap electric guitar don’t get too carried away getting the ideal timber, you may find it more expensive than you need to be paying, and it’s not essential at the start.

And there’s a few unusual terms you’ll need to become familiar with if you’re buying an electric guitar for the first time. Here’s a taste.

Pickups. The pickup is a magnet with a coil of wire wrapped around it placed right under the strings. This receives the vibrations of the strings and turns these into an electric signal for the amp to use. There are 2 types of pickup. The single coil, which produces a sound that sounds good for playing rock, blues and country. Humbuckers are a pickup with 2 coils next to each other that produces a warmer sound which is great for metal and rock in particular. Some guitars have a combination of single coils and humbuckers, and there is usually at least 2 pickups utilized.

Bridge. The bridge is where the strings connect to the body of the guitar. You can have a fixed bridge or a Vibrato bridge which allows you to move the bridge to tighten or loosen the strings. The fixed bridge is better for beginners who can graduate to a Vibrato bridge after they’ve mastered the basics.

Hollow body electric guitars are the second basic style of guitar. These, as the name suggests, have a hollow body although there is also a variation of this which is the semi hollow. As the player plays his guitar the hollow space helps the body resonate which produces a quite distinctive sound. These are good guitars for jazz. These hollow body guitars also utilize pickups, including single coil and humbucker.

That’s really just the start when it comes to understanding electric guitars, and for the enthusiast it’s a lifetime job learning all there is to know about them. And finding out exactly what it is that you need to play to produce exactly the sound you want to produce. That’s part of the fun of playing the guitar, it’s a constant learning process, not just about how to play but what to play as well.

Father Christmas dates back to the 1600’s and was based on St Nicholas. St. Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra, a city in present day turkey during the 4th century. He was a kind hearted man and wanted to give to the poor and needy without them knowing. One story says that St. Nicholas climbed the roof of a house and dropped a bag of money down the chimney which landed in a stocking that a young girl had hung to dry.

Father Christmas had a stout frame and wore a long green robe because green represented the coming of spring and the hope of new life. Sometimes his robe was trimmed with fur. He also sometimes had a wreath of holly on his head. He was a friend to all people and animals loved him too. Father Christmas flew over houses on an enchanted white horse on Christmas Eve and left presents of chocolate and fruit in shoes the children would leave out for him.

In France Father Christmas is known as Pere Noel here he has a donkey named Mistletoe who helps him deliver all his gifts. In French nativity sets you find figures of the Holy Family, sheep, wise men and also shop keepers, farmers, fisherman, townsfolk, dogs, cats etc. These represent people and things from all walks of life and are called “les santons” or little saints. On Christmas Eve the baby is added to the créche and most families gather to eat a large dinner. After dinner the family prepares for Pere Noel. Children fill their shoes with carrots and hay for Mistletoe and leave them by the fire with a glass of wine for Pere Noel. When all are asleep Pere Noel travels with Mistletoe and an overflowing bag of gifts to each home. He fills their shoes with candies and presents.

How Father Christmas Became Santa Claus.

During the 18th century people traveled to America from all over the world, bringing with them the cultures and traditions of their homelands. One of these was Father Christmas. In 1822 a poem was written by Clement Moore called “An Account of a visit from St. Nicholas.” This described St. Nicholas as having eyes that twinkle, cheeks like roses, a smile with dimples on each side of his mouth, a white beard and mustache and he was jolly, chubby and plump. The poem also gave him an enchanted sleigh drawn by eight reindeer named, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen. He came down the chimney with a large pack of toys and gifts which he used to fill the stockings and put under the tree. Then in 1865 Thomas Nast drew a picture of an elf like Santa with a long white beard. He drew similar pictures of Santa for 30 years. In 1931 the Coca Cola Company hired an artist to draw Santa as warm, friendly, chubby and human, not elf like. This led to the jolly, plump Santa Claus of today. Since then Santa has had a round plump face and frame with a merry twinkle in his eyes. He wears a red plush suit with white fur trim and wide black belt, black boots and red and white stocking hat. He always has a large pack stuffed to over flowing with toys and gifts for everyone, young or old.
